Shenmue 3 will not work on current generation of consoles

Posted by: Ahmed Al-Dajani 15/Jul/2009
The first time I saw shenmue was on a tape called "what is Shenmue" that was after I had bought a Japanese Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure. after that, I had started to follow Shenmue news to know exactly when it will be released. At long last, Sega announced the Japanese release date for the game, and I had imported the game immediately in order to play what I considered to be the most anticipated game ever for me.
Although I had finished the game multiple times without understanding the full story of the game (as I mentioned before I played the JP version), I had started to look forward to the US version to experience the game in its full potential. Though the voice acting in the US version was bad, I had enjoyed the game more because of my understanding of the story.
I know that shenmue have a lot of annoyances and criticism like the drought of free battles, and the lack of fast forwarding time in the game. But the game was unique and epic at that time. So I had started to anticipate the sequel to see what Yu Suzuki (the creator of shenmue ) can do to improve the sequel.
Sega announced that they will halt the production of the Dreamcast, and Shenmue 2 will be released in Japan and Europe for the Dreamcast and the US version will be released exclusively on Microsoft new console at that time, Xbox. Shenmue 1 had sold over one million copies on the Dreamcast and the sequel was not as successful as the first one.
So you may ask your self why am telling you a history lesson about Shenmue and Sega? How Shenmue 3 will not work on current generation of consoles? Continue reading to find your answers.
The first reason is the development cost of Shenmue was 70 million dollars as it was mentioned by Yu Suzuki, and if he wants to make the game on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or the Wii it will cost more than that, and it will be a very risky decision for Sega.
The second reason is the poor sales of the sequel on Xbox, which is a big sign that the game will not sell well if Sega considered releasing part 3 on current generation of consoles.
The third and final reason is new generation of gamers will not play Shenmue 3, why? Because they haven't played the prequels and the only audience that will play part 3 is Sega fanatics who had bought the Dreamcast.
So these are my reasons for why Shenmue 3 will not work on current generation of consoles, but I have more questions for you folks to discuss, will you buy Shenmue 3 if Sega considered releasing it on Dreamcast with the same engine? Or how about releasing Shenmue and its sequel on Xbox live or PSN in an attempt of reviving the franchise before Sega and Yu Suzuki considers making part 3?

My god this article is terrible... Firstly you just give us all the information we already know about Shenmue, and then you go on giving silly facts to suggest why it could never be made, just to ensure Sega don't bother. I think it's fairly obvious you're not a professional writer due to the way you comment and even the poor quality of this article. It simply wouldn't cost nearly as much as it did to make Shenmue on the current generation. Firstly, the technology is in place, and would only need to be upgraded. Secondly, the amount of work done in those days would not be needed as much now due to the advances in game engines etc. They really should just release it on the same engine, but first they must re-release Shenmue 1 and 2 on the Xbox Live Arcade/PSN, and then perhaps also release Shenmue 3, 4 etc. on Arcade and PSN too. Also, don't be fooled into thinking Shenmue 3 would be the last game. It wouldn't necessarily be that at all, as there are far too many chapters left in the Shenmue storyline to fit into one game on one DVD disk, or even as one download. They should split the game up; perhaps even into the original episodic form the game was designed to be sold in.

@ jounceman i get your point, but i recommend shenmue 3 to be release on ps3 or xbox360, why? Shenmue was created for the hardcore gamers, and if you was tracking the sales for hardcore games on wii (madworld and no more heroes comes to mind) you will understand what i mean. Regarding wii motion control and how it will improve shenmue gameplay, they can use natal or ps3 motion controller with HD graphics to make the game as perfect as they can.

"Shenmue 1 sold over one million on the dreamcast while the sequel was not as successful as the first one." WTF!??? don't you mean Shenmue 2?

@xino Don't worry about it, alot of the facts aren't even true that he's said. One example is where he said "criticism like...you can’t fast forward the time in the game", even though you CAN in Shenmue 2. That was already fixed in the sequel to the first game... Get your facts right.

@ ObsessedMikey I'm explaining what are the reasons preventing sega from making shenmue 3 (facts), and by letting shenmue fan base to share their opinions on how is the best way to release the game. This article is all about preventing shenmue 3 (if we are lucky) from becoming a flop.

@ ObsessedMikey: I was talking about the issues in shenmue 1, and when i said ""So i started to anticipate the sequel to see how can yu suzuki (the creator of shenmue ) improve the game" which means he fixed a lot of issues in the first game including the option to fast forward time in the game.

The problem is that the motion tech with 360 & PS3 is still new and has yet tp prove itself. Yea we could all see @ E3 that it worked, but lets see an actually game developed from the ground up. If Sega were to use those motion control interfaces then it go right back to one of your reasons for it "not working on next gen consoles"...production costs. Wii is cheaper and proven. Yes Madworld didn't do too well. Last time I checked No More Heroes sold around 300k+ that was months ago. And 300K isn't bad. Who knows what it is now. But you have to remember those are new IPs. Shenmue is a familiar franchise. My point? This game can be successful on Wii.

if yakuza 3 can do well then so can shenmue... its all about marketing and exposing it to the right market of gammers.. the only thing that would cost money in this game is the graphical build and up and design and the re-recording of all the voice overs to meet todays standards everything else was finished from years ago... i still own the originals and all of the yakuza games... sega get off your lazy ass's
