Top 10 games that will blow us away visually in 2012
Games get prettier and prettier each year that's due to the continuous improvements being made to game engines and the great optimization developers do to squeeze more juice out of current consoles. Not only that, PC gaming has shined recently and developers are taking advantage of the ever-evolving PC platform to create visuals that only possible on high end PCs.
There are many games coming this year that will look amazing, but I wanted to confine the list to only ten games. From what I have seen so far, I believe that these ten games will be the most visually striking games in 2012. Some of the games in the list aren't 100% confirmed to ship this year, but there is a high possibility they will. Which game will be the most impressive visually in 2012? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
Note: The list is in no particular order.
1. The Witcher 2: Assassins of King (enhanced Edittion):
The Witcher 2 on PC is one of the best looking games ever and on April 17 an enhanced version of the game will be released on Xbox360 and PC. CD Projekt has added four hours of new content to the third chapter of the game and the new environments look absolutely amazing. The Xbox360 version is shaping up to be one of the best looking games on consoles.
2. Max Payne 3:
Max Payne is back and he never looked so good. From what I have seen so far from the trailers, Max Payne 3 is shaping up to be a stunning looking game. The animation is top notch, the visuals are slick and bullet time looks better than ever.
3. Bioshock Infinite:
The first Bioshock game is powered by Unreal Engine 2.5, but Irrational games heavily modified the engine at that time to accomplish the vision set by them. Bioshock Infinite will run on the latest version of Unreal Engine 3, but the developers at Irrational games have made many tweaks to the Epic's middle-ware engine to make their game stand out from the rest of games powered by Unreal Engine 3.
Irrational games technology director Chris Kline said, "All major FPS engines (CryEngine 3, UE3, id Tech 5) are designed and optimized for static environments that the player moves through, which is a reasonable choice because, even if there are trees moving in the wind, the ground under the player's feet isn't going anywhere. Unfortunately for our tech team (but good for you) everything in Columbia is capable of moving. The very ground beneath your feet could fall out of the sky at any moment, which makes for some awesome gameplay and visuals but required us to create a completely new technology that we're calling "Floating Worlds."
Bioshock Infinite will be one of the few examples where we see great marriage of art direction and technical prowess.
4. Assassin's Creed 3:
The Assassin's Creed franchise is one of my favorites and I always find myself immersed while playing the games. Assassin's Creed 3 will be running on an upgraded version of the Anvil engine, titled 'AnvilNext'. The new engine will allow the dev team to include over 2,000 characters on-screen at any one time, implement a dynamic weather system and completely overhaul the animation system. Just look at the screen above, I really can't wait for the game.
5. The Last of Us:
The Uncharted games are known for their impressive visuals and if Naughty Dog previous works are an indication for what we can expect from their upcoming game The Last of Us, it's pretty much confirmed that it will be one of the best looking games of this generation.
6. Far Cry 3:
Do you know the definition of insanity? Playing an open-ended FPS with amazing visuals in these days. Far Cry 3 is running on an upgraded version of the Dunia Engine that powered the second game in the series, Far Cry 2. The tropical setting of the game will provide players with many breathtaking sights.
7. Resident Evil 6:
Resident Evil 5 is one of the best looking games of this generation and from what we have seen from Resident Evil 6 trailer, the game is shaping up to be a gorgeous looking game.
8. Halo 4:
Master Cheif is back and according to Corrinne Yu, the The Principal Engine Programmer of Halo 4, the game will be the best looking game on Xbox360.
9. Tomb Raider:
At E3 2011, everyone was pretty much surprised by the first footage of the game and the new direction Crystal Dynamics has set for the next Tomb Raider game. If the footage from last year's E3 is any indication and if the game get released this year, be prepared to be amazed visually.
10. Medal of Honor: Warfighter:
Medal of Honor: Warfighter is powered by Dice's state of the art engine Frostbite 2.0. So what does that mean? It means that the game will look amazing.
